With the contest in a three-way tie at 10 points each, Dan picked up the point in the season finale giving him the win and a record setting fourth title. Again this year the last game of the season brought heartache for Chuck Machock who was denied the title in the last game of the season for the second straight year. "I thought the score would be between 50 and 60. I graduated from high school in '55 and college in '59 so I was going to go with one of those numbers. I couldn't decide so I flipped a coin. The coin flip made me go with 55." If the coin had landed the other way it would have meant that Chuck would have tied Dan Hoard for the title and ended his seven years of futility in the Struggle. But it was not to be.
Mo Egger was speechless. He refused to say a word on air at the end of the broadcast. After the broadcast all he could say was "How would you like your steak, Mr. Hoard?" By missing the score by the widest margin he became the waiter for the dinner celebration.
As Dan "Mr. March" Hoard looks forward to defending his title next year, his new mantra will no doubt be "One for the thumb!"
